Designed to keep users up to date without interrupting workflow, Snackr delivers a continuous feed of headlines and breaking news, ensuring no important update is missed.

Installation and Setup

Installation is straightforward, requiring Adobe AIR (version 1.5.3 or later). Once installed, Snackr presents a clean and minimalist interface. Feeds can be added by simply pasting RSS URLs or by importing an OPML file, accommodating both casual users and those with extensive subscriptions. Snackr randomly selects headlines from configured feeds, keeping the ticker fresh and varied.

Interface and Usability

Snackr displays a translucent bar along any edge of the desktop — bottom, top, left, or right — giving flexibility to users who want to customize their workspace. The movement and speed of the ticker can be adjusted in the preferences, allowing for a faster or more leisurely news flow. When a headline catches attention, clicking it pauses the ticker and opens a pop-up window with more details. This in-app reader provides a preview, and a further click leads directly to the article’s original webpage in the default browser.

Customization and Performance

Snackr excels in ease of use but is limited in visual customization. The translucent black bar is designed to blend in, but options to adjust opacity or theme are absent. The application runs smoothly even with multiple feeds, maintaining a low profile in terms of both system resources and screen real estate. There have been reports of rare memory usage issues, but optimizations and bug fixes in recent versions have addressed these for the majority of users.

Integration and Features

Snackr includes integration with popular RSS platforms, streamlining feed management. Although direct Google Reader sync was previously a standout feature, changes to third-party service authentication have limited this capability. Nonetheless, importing a feed list remains simple, and support for feed:// URLs ensures compatibility with most news sources. The ticker can be temporarily minimized if distraction-free work is needed, making it adaptable to various workflows.
